ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A 3-year-old boy was killed in Escondido Thursday afternoon when he unbuckled his child seat, exited the vehicle his mother was parking and was then struck.

The woman took her son to Downtown Palomar Medical Center following the 4 p.m. crash in the 400 block of West Fourth Avenue, but the boy died from his injuries, said Escondido police Officer Steve Braucht.

Neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the accident, Braucht said.

"The driver, unaware that the child was outside the vehicle, pulled forward to complete the parking maneuver, and struck the child," the officer said.

Criminal charges are not expected to be filed, Braucht said.
