FALLBROOK, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say an effort to get rid of bees near a San Diego County home backfired - sparking a fire that caused $70,000 in damage.
The North County Times says residents of the Fallbrook home lit citronella candles to chase off bees from a nearby hive on Thursday afternoon. Instead, the untended candles set fire to the house.
John Buchanan of the North County Fire Protection District says the flames were spreading through the walls and attic when firefighters arrived.
Nobody was hurt but two people were displaced from the damaged home.
