SAN DIEGO (AP) — A federal judge in San Diego has set bail at $100,000 for a border inspector nicknamed "Hammer" who is charged with taking bribes in exchange for working to allow illegal immigrants and vehicles loaded with tons of marijuana through his lane over a 10-year period.
Lorne Leslie Jones smiled slightly and winked toward a woman seated in the second row during his initial court appearance Friday.
The 46-year-old Chula Vista man is the latest in a string of U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers to be accused of corruption. His case is noteworthy for the duration of his alleged crimes — from January 2000 to December 2009.
He has worked as a border inspector in San Diego since 1994.
