SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 23-year-old bicyclist was struck by a car in the El Cerrito neighborhood early Friday, police said.

The rider was headed west in the 5500 block of El Cajon Boulevard around 12:20 a.m. when he was hit by an eastbound sedan driven by a 48-year-old man who had been turning into the Lucky Lady Casino, according to a San Diego Police Department statement.

The rider was dressed in dark clothing, was not wearing a helmet and his bike had no lights, the statement said.

The sedan's driver did not see the bicyclist and crashed into his right side, police said.

The rider suffered head trauma and lacerations to his right hand that required surgery, the police statement said.

Police said alcohol was not involved in the crash.
