EL CAJON (CBS 8) – It was a close call in Fletcher Hills Monday afternoon, as a brush fire raced up a hill toward several homes.

The fire was first reported at 1:45 p.m. along Windmill View Road near Ventana Way.

More than 30 firefighters from six agencies were called into fight the flames, as they burned up the hill toward homes on Hacienda Drive. But until fire crews got there, residents took matters into their own hands.

"Immediately I called 911. I grabbed the hose and started spraying, and I saw the neighbors spraying and the flames were by our fence. It was really scary," said Gail and Amanda Leiman whose home was threatened by the fire.

The fire was knocked down after about 20 minutes.

Firefighters are crediting the homeowners association for clearing brush and creating a defensible space around the homes.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
