OCEANSIDE, Calif. (AP) — State licensing officials say a former Oceanside childcare worker has been banned from ever working with kids again because she twice punished preschoolers by putting them in a dark closet.
U-T San Diego reports (http://bit.ly/PrjE29 ) Wednesday that 55-year-old Elaine Joseph Rowe was fired from Kiddie Academy of Oceanside last October after surveillance camera footage showed her disciplining the tiny children by shutting them in a supply closet.
Rowe is appealing the decision. Her attorney William Winship says the incident was a "colossal misunderstanding" and Rowe has many character witnesses to vouch for her.
A state report says that in one incident, Rowe stood against the closet door, barricading the child inside.
The school told state officials that they immediately removed Rowe from the school after the incidents.
