SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A collision at a Clairemont Mesa intersection killed a 91-year-old motorist Friday, authorities reported.

The nonagenarian was headed south on Mount Abernathy Avenue when her gray Toyota Camry was hit by an eastbound car at Balboa Avenue about 11:15 a.m., according to San Diego police.

The impact sent the Camry onto the roadside on the southwest corner of the street crossing, where it plowed into a light pole, Officer Tony Martinez said. The driver, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.

The other motorist, a 32-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries, including bruises and scratches, Martinez said.

It was unclear which motorist had the right of way at the time of the accident, which left Balboa Avenue closed between Cannington Drive and Genesee Avenue into the early afternoon. About 2 p.m., police were able to reopen the westbound lanes of the thoroughfare.
