Carlsbad is going forward with plans to slash $5.3 million from its budget. Council members voted to approve the cuts Tuesday night.

Employees will keep their jobs, but there will be a hiring freeze in non-safety departments. Park maintenance, overtime hours, travel costs and training expenses are on the chopping block.

A spokesperson says the cuts will allow Carlsbad to cover the expected drop in revenue and keep its surplus to maintain a balanced budget in this sagging economy.
