SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The U.S. Coast Guard is kicking off the summer boating season with "National Safe Boating Week."
The event is held every year during the week leading up to Memorial Day weekend.
The purpose is to make sure recreational boaters understand the importance of boating responsibly and wearing a life jacket at all times.
"The majority of boating deaths occur to people who drown and they aren't wearing life vests so we really want to stress this," said Rey Armstrong. "We want to stress the fact that everybody should have at least one life vest for everybody on board. If you have children on board they should have children's life vests and they should be properly fitted."
During National Safe Boating Week, boaters can have their boats inspected for free by safety experts.
