SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew Monday hoisted a 21-year-old sailor suffering from chest and back pain from a U.S. Navy ship 20 miles northwest of La Jolla, officials said.

The crew of the USS Bonhomme Richard, an amphibious assault ship homeported in San Diego, contacted the Coast Guard about 3:15 a.m. to request medical evacuation for the sailor, said Coast Guard spokeswoman Allyson Conroy.

A Coast Guard flight surgeon recommended the woman be taken off the ship for immediate medical attention and a MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter was launched from Coast Guard Sector San Diego, Conroy said.

The helicopter hoisted the sailor just after 4:20 a.m. She was taken to the Coast Guard station, from where an ambulance took her to a hospital, Conroy said.
