SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Community members in Point Loma are calling for increased pedestrian safety in their neighborhood. A meeting was held Saturday to address the ongoing dangers after a 7-month old child was killed.
Last month, 7-month-old Juniper Aavang died and her father was seriously injured after they were hit while crossing the crosswalk at Catalina Boulevard and Canon Street in Point Loma.
Jennifer Mozano, a mother of two, lives near the crosswalk and she was one of more than a dozen local residents at a community meeting to discuss the steps to take in order to make the intersection safe.
"I don't want anything like this to happen again," she says.
At the meeting, residents discussed several options including having the city lower the speed limit, raising the crosswalk or getting rid of it all together.
The city is considering adding a pedestrian-activated light, but local residents doubt it will be enough.
