SAN DIEGO — Law enforcement personnel from San Diego County Office of Emergency Services, the cities of Chula Vista and Carlsbad and 70 other agencies are conducting terrorism training drills Wednesday morning.
The training exercises are at the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista and Legoland in Carlsbad.
The emergency exercise is a coordinated attack scenario that results in mock mass casualties at the two locations. Other city emergency operations centers, law enforcement and fire agencies and all hospitals will also be participating.
"From a public safety standpoint, we try to prepare for every type of emergency possible and unfortunately, in today's day and age, we have to be prepared for active shooters and terrorism events, and we have spent the last decade preparing," said Battalion Chief Jayson Summers from Coronado Fire.
More than 100 actors and actresses are acting as terrorist attack victims so different agencies can roll through the hypothetical scenario. Police are also practicing family assistance centers to help victims meet up with family.
In total, 1,000 county, city, state, federal, private sector workers and actors are participating in the exercise. It took a year to plan this drill.
