SAN DIEGO — Mayor Kevin Faulconer and other city officials held a ground-breaking ceremony Tuesday morning on a $3.4 million renovation for the Bonita Cove playground at Mission Bay Park.

Once complete, the playground will be named after Maruta Gardner, who was struck and killed by a drunk driver back in 2016 while she was cleaning up graffiti near Mission Beach.

She was a longtime Mission Beach resident who was known for her work in the community.
