A convicted sex offender has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with the June 2007 disappearance of San Diego State student, Donna Jou.

Convicted sex offender John Steven Burgess, 36, is in custody in Los Angeles, where police believe Jou died of a drug overdose. Investigators report that Burgess dumped her body into the ocean somewhere off the southern California coast.

Burgess was scheduled to be released from state prison this weekend, after serving more than a year on an unrelated offense. He's now being held on $1 million bail.

Nineteen-year-old Donna Jou was last seen by her family riding away from her mother's Orange County home on the back of Burgess's motorcycle. Her body was never found.
