Councilwoman Marti Emerald talks retirement and who should replace her

San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald held a news conference on Wednesday after recently announcing her retirement.
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald held a news conference on Wednesday after recently announcing her retirement.

Emerald said she decided not to seek re-election for the District Nine seat in 2016, so she can spend more time with her family.

Emerald said she came to the realization when she returned to work after a series of chemotherapy treatments for cancer.

"It made me think about how I spend my time and while I love what I do I love my family even more and I don't have enough time to spend with them so I told myself when I'm back on my feet I'm going to change my priorities and that's what I'm doing," she said.

Emerald announced that her chief of staff, Ricardo Flores, will be running for her open seat.

She said he is the perfect candidate for the job.
