SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The county of San Diego's assessor/recorder/clerk and treasurer-tax collector offices will stay open one hour later, beginning Monday.

The offices in the County Administration Center downtown, Chula Vista, El Cajon, Kearny Mesa and San Marcos will now be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They used to close at 4 p.m.

"Being able to provide our taxpayers with an extra hour during the day to get things done is the right thing to do," said Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister. "We will be able to help people whose schedule made it impossible for them to come in before 4 p.m."

Ernie Dronenberg, the assessor/recorder/clerk, said he has seen people rushing through hallways to get to one of the offices, only to find out it had closed 30 minutes earlier.

"We can do better and operate our office with the same hours as most other government departments and businesses," Dronenberg said.

He said reorganizing the department allowed him to extend the hours without adding new employees.
