SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two people were without a home Sunday after a midnight blaze destroyed their house north of Little Italy, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said.

The blaze broke out in a structure in the 3500 block of Columbia Street about midnight, a dispatcher said.

The owners of the residence where not home when the fire began, but found the house in flames when they returned.

Fire crews arrived on the scene to find the house engulfed by flames, but were able to prevent damage to neighboring buildings, the dispatcher said.

The fire caused an estimated $550,000 worth of property damage before it was put out just before 12:30 a.m.

No injuries were reported, the dispatcher said, and the cause was under investigation.
