2 injured, suspected gunman dead following Chula Vista shooting in Costco parking lot

Authorities said the alleged shooter was the apparent ex-boyfriend of the female victim who was with her new boyfriend and their newborn child.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Two people were injured in a shooting and the suspected shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot on Monday, according to Chula Vista police. Authorities responded to the scene in the parking lot of a Costco located in the 1100 block of Broadway in Chula Vista after gunfire was reported around 1 p.m.

Responding officers located three injured adults at the scene - one female and two males, according to Chula Vista Police Lieutenant Dan Peak. They all appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds.

Lt. Peak provided an update Monday afternoon saying that the suspected shooter and the female victim appear to have had a previous relationship. The man shot that was with the female victim is believed to be her current boyfriend.

"The victims were putting their groceries away when the suspect approached from behind and began firing at them," said Peak.

There was a small child in a stroller with the couple but he or she was uninjured. Peak described the child as a newborn infant, who is now in the care of a relative.

The female victim's mother picked the child up following the shooting and told News 8 that the victims are the the child's parents.

All three victims were transported to UC San Diego Medical Center, according to Peak. The suspected shooter was declared dead at the hospital according to police.

The two victims both underwent surgery for the injuries Monday afternoon and are expected to survive their injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, according to Lt. Peak.
