SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Police are searching for man who shot and killed a customer during a robbery at a Clairemont convenience store. The shooting happened just before four in the morning at the A.M./ P.M. Arco in the 6100 block of Balboa Avenue.

Authorities said the victim was a regular at the business.

"He was just in the wrong place this morning," said Lt. Paul Rossison.

Police said it all started when a man made his regular stop at the convenience store. He chatted with the clerk, and then, the suspect came in.

"He was armed with a hand gun, he came inside and confronted both our clerk and our victim ordering them the ground. He also ordered the clerk to empty the cash register. The clerk complied with his request and demands, and then went on the floor behind the counter," said Rossison.

The clerk said he heard a verbal exchange between the suspect and customer, then a gun shot.

"Our officers arrived on scene in about two minutes. They located a 48-year-old male inside the business on the floor. He had suffered a gun shot wound to the chest. He was transported immediately once medics arrived to Sharpe Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased about an hour later," said Rossison.

The suspect took off on foot and headed North. All police were able to find was some money nearby and a hat, possibly belonging to the suspect.

The suspect is described as a black male, wearing a blue hoodie and jeans.

Police also say his face was partially covered with a black bandanna.

It was not clear who the victim was, but police simply said he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"He was just out and about this morning doing his routine. Unfortunately he was here and this is a complete tragedy," said Rossison.
