Dogs hit the water for surf lessons

People aren't the only ones hitting the water to stay cool this weekend.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - People aren't the only ones hitting the water to stay cool this weekend.

Saturday, the Helen Woodward Animal Center started its annual surfing classes for dogs at the Del Mar dog beach.

The SoCal Surf Dogs are helping with the classes -- with the hopes that the mutts will compete in the "surf dog surf-a-thon" competition in September.

Funds from the classes and competition all benefit a great cause.

"The Helen Woodward Animal Center organized its first surf dog competition eight years ago to raise money for their shelter."

The hour long classes cost $45 and include a doggie life jacket and soft foam surfboard.
