SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The apparently drunken driver who survived a fiery car crash that killed his two female passengers in Bay Park Saturday was expected to be arrested upon his release from a hospital, police said Sunday.
Officer Dan Lasher said alcohol was a factor as the driver veered a vehicle to swerve off Friars Road, around 7:30 a.m., and struck a boulder. The
vehicle caught fire, which spread to the brush.
He was able to escape and sustained minor cuts and burns.
Loved ones said the victims attended Oceanside High School together.
The victims had attended a concert venue the night before the crash, but it remains unclear as to where they were coming from at the time of the crash.
On Monday, family members of the one of the victims visited the scene of the crash for the first time.
The victims of the crash were identified as 20-year-old Lupe Amado, and 21-year-old Lizzie Garcia.
A dog, who loved ones believe to be Lizzie's, also died in the crash.
Loved ones said Lupe was generous and outgoing. She was also a mother of two-year-old little boy named Nikolas.
As for Lizzie, condolences have been pouring in on her Facebook page.
Her father wrote, in part:
"I ask all family and friends to say a small prayer for the strength to get thru this difficult time in our family. I wish I could see her again, and tell I love her one last time, but I never got the chance. All because of a selfish bastard that thought he could drink and drive. He took our daughter away from us."
Lupe's brother said it's still a shock to their entire family.
One that should serve as a reminder to those who choose to drink and drive.
