Authorities said an 8-year-old boy asleep in his bed suffered a wound to the foot Friday morning when he was struck by a bullet that pierced a wall at a large apartment complex in Spring Valley.

Deputies received several reports of multiple gunfire at the complex at 8360 Helix St. around 4:30 a.m., San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Mike Munsey said.

When deputies arrived, they found one person was hit by a bullet that had been fired outside but went through a wall. The 8-year-old boy was not the intended target, authorities said.

Witnesses said two armed male juveniles ran away, getting into a car that sped away southbound, authorities said.
