VISTA (CBS 8) - Family and friends said goodbye Tuesday to Kathy Scharbarth at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Vista.
Page McGowan was one of Kathy's best friends. She says Tuesday's service included tears, but when you're talking about Kathy there have to be smiles too.
"Kathy always had laughter, and there were moments where we were all laughing and she was definitely laughing along with us, and she would have wanted it that way," McGowan said.
Kathy was kidnapped from her Carlsbad home and killed Thanksgiving Day, which was also her 34th birthday. Her ex-boyfriend Michael Robles has been arrested and charged with her murder.
"What an amazing person she is. It's hard for me to say 'was,' so what an amazing person she is," friend Sara Thomas said.
Thomas says she and Kathy have been so close since high school, she considers her more a sister than a friend.
"Her smile, her laughter, her generosity, her love -- honestly, if I could be half the person Kathy is, I would feel great," she said.
Kathy's family asked that no news cameras film Tuesday's service, but inside the church it was standing room only, with around a thousand people packed inside, not only to show their love for Kathy, but also her family, including her daughter Madison.
"She's the strongest 13-year-old I have ever seen. It's amazing her strength and she's so surrounded by love and support. If anyone can get through this, it's definitely Mads," McGowan said.
