LOS ANGELES (AP) — The family of a student who disappeared in 2007, and whose body was never found, is protesting the release of a man who pleaded guilty in her death.

The mother, father and sister of Donna Jou appeared outside the downtown Los Angeles Criminal Courts building on Wednesday with signs demanding justice for the 19-year-old San Diego State University student.

They want her case reopened and a new search for her body launched. They say they don't know if she's really dead.

Steven Burgess, a convicted sex offender, admitted giving her cocaine and heroin and said he dumped her body in the ocean after she overdosed.

He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to five years in prison. Burgess was due for release Wednesday, having served half his sentence.
