Garbage fire nearly ignites Mission Valley hotel

A garbage container fire spread to the scaffolding of a construction site Sunday morning and came close to catching a Mission Valley hotel's high rise on fire, according to authorities.

MISSION VALLEY (CBS8/CNS) - A garbage container fire spread to the scaffolding of a construction site Sunday morning and came close to catching a Mission Valley hotel's high rise on fire, according to authorities.

The fire started in a large, construction-sized dumpster at the Town & Country Resort and Convention Center on Hotel Circle North shortly before 11 a.m., San Diego Fire Rescue Department spokesman Lee Swanson said.

Firefighters who were first on scene immediately called for a second alarm response, worried that the fire would spread to the hotel's tower and its guest rooms. But that second alarm was canceled when the first firefighters on the scene extinguished the fire in about 20 minutes.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire us under investigation.
