EL CAJON (CBS 8) - El Cajon police and Grossmont High School have teamed up to help keep students safe.

Students and staff in six classrooms at the school took part in a competition to see who could create the most useful emergency preparedness kit.

The kits are designed to be used during shelter in place situations including threats, fires and other natural disasters.

The idea came from the school resource officer following several lockdowns in the area.

"I'm doing extra steps and I think the El Cajon Police Department is doing extra steps just so in lockdown situations these kids can be comfortable and feel safe and secure,” said Jeannine Johns with the El Cajon Police.

Two winners were awarded with a luncheon Wednesday provided by the El Cajon Police Officer's Association.
