SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The fight to reduce head injuries in football comes to San Diego thanks to a special clinic held by Heads Up Football.

USA Football master trainer Terry Summerfield and the Heads Up Football program are taking a hands on, instead of head on, approach to develop a better and safer game of football.

Coaches put youth players through a series of drills to reinforce proper tackling and blocking mechanics that focus on reducing helmet contact. Summerfield says teaching coaches and parents is just as important as teaching athletes.

USA Football will continue to work year round by having player safety coaches monitor practices and games throughout the season.
