Coronavirus is teaching kids lessons they can't learn in the classroom

One San Diego family is trading life lessons with added bonus of bonding time.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — With kids out of the classroom due to the coronavirus outbreak, many parents are teaching kids things they can't learn in the classroom.

“As a society, as modern women, we've been convinced we don't have anything else to teach our kids,” said Maria Florez, who is part of a San Diego mom's Facebook group.

Florez is a former teacher turned home-school mom. Now days, she is referred to as a mega-mom with six kids at home - from a toddler to teens. And they are suddenly preparing for adulthood.

“Just because they're not sitting in front of a book at a table, at a desk with kids all their age, does not mean that they're not learning,” she said.

In just a matter of days at home, they've gone from using real tools to fix toys, to tending their garden, to changing oil in dad's car, to baking banana bread.

If that is not enough, they're also getting in on the stock market.

“We were looking at the markets and we're like-guys this is a good time for you to be learning some of this stuff,” she said.

They’re trading life lessons, with added bonus of bonding time, she said.

Florez added, “Just slow down for a little bit.. and make really good memories with them.”
