SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Freeway fatalities were up but arrests for suspicion of drunk driving for the New Year's holiday were down countywide this year compared to last year, according to the California Highway Patrol.

For the 36-hour period from 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. today, there were 30 arrests made in San Diego County for suspicion of drunk driving compared to 34 arrests last year. There were two fatalities reported this year compared to one last year over the same period.

Statewide, a total of 566 arrests were made for suspicion of drunk driving this year compared to 510 arrests made for the same period last year.

Deaths were also up statewide, with 12 fatalities reported this year compared to nine the last year.

Arrest numbers for suspicion of drunk driving were only those made by CHP officers. Fatalities reported were for all law enforcement agencies.

The CHP investigates all crashes on freeways and on all roads in unincorporated areas.
