CHULA VISTA (CBS 8) - A person was found dead Thursday at a Chula Vista office building and homicide detectives were summoned to investigate.

The investigation was launched after someone reported the body at the building at 45 Third Avenue shortly before 1:30 a.m., according to Chula Vista police.

A resident called police to report a possible homeless man, slumped against the doorway. When paramedics arrived, they found the victim, a 44-year-old Hispanic man who lived in the building, had significant trauma and was bleeding. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The blood trail leads about a mile away from the original scene, and there is also blood in front of a Starbucks store west of the area. The Starbucks location is the second, of multiple locations, in this investigation. Police don't know if the blood tail was left by the victim who was trying to get home, or a possible attacker leaving the main scene.

The property at 45 Third Avenue is a mixed-use building, which has businesses and apartments. No one was being allowed in or out of the complex as of 6:30 a.m. Thursday and there is no indication on whether or not business at the Starbucks location was being disrupted.

Police said other residents who knew the victim are cooperating in the investigation and answering questions. Investigators were treating this as a murder case and officers were expected to be on the scene for several hours Thursday morning. As of this report, there are no suspect descriptions and the identity of the victim hasn't been released.
