Hundreds of students, parents and teachers are protesting possible layoffs in the Sweetwater Union High School District.

The protesters said teacher cuts are not the answer to an $11.5 million deficit next year.

The district said board members are doing their best to minimize the cuts, including offering incentives such as early retirement.

However, teachers say cuts should only be made at the district level.

The district said more than 100 precautionary layoff notices could be distributed within the next two weeks.
