The incident was reported about 8 a.m. near Eolus Avenue and Orpheus Avenue, just west of Interstate 5.

ENCINITAS, Calif. — Authorities in Encinitas were on the scene of a reported deputy-involved shooting on Friday.

The incident was reported about 8 a.m. near Eolus Avenue and Orpheus
Avenue, just west of Interstate 5, according to the San Diego County
Sheriff's Department.

The PIO for San Diego Sheriff Department said neighbors called the police to report a suspicious person in their neighborhood. When deputies arrived they found the man who then pulled out a firearm. Two deputies opened fire then immediately rendered aid to the man who was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No deputies were injured.

Investigators found a handgun at the scene.

The shooting took place on an empty lot between homes.  Neighbors tell News 8 the area is frequented by teens and transients.

Brittany Guarino says a man recently set up an encampment there, saying,

"He was just outside minding his own business. He had set up camp and was eating lunch just looking at the view, but i didnt think much of it because there are always people hanging out over there."

Another neighbor described hearing the shots.

Sherry Shippy said,

"First, I thought it was gunshots but it sounded like firecrackers….pop pop pop pop pop."

According to a Sheriff's Department tweet, the 1400 block of Orpheus Lane is closed for the investigation.
