ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A man found inside a home following a fire in Escondido died Sunday, according to authorities. Escondido police said reports of the fire in 600 block of Waverly Place came in around 11:20 a.m. when people in the area saw smoke coming from a home.
The first police officer to arrive on the scene reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence, said Lt. Kevin Toth of the Escondido Police Department.
"There were a couple neighbors who we believe were in the front yard," he said. "They indicated they believed at least one person inside the residence."
"Fire personnel entered the structure to extinguish the fire and discovered an unresponsive adult male subject inside the residence," he added.
The man was taken to Palomar Medical Center where he later died, Toth said.
Police and fire investigators were working together to determine the cause of the fire and death, Toth said.
The victim's name was being withheld pending notification of his family.
