Local medical professionals hit the street to help the homeless

Nearly 30 members from a medical ministry of First Presbyterian Church spent the afternoon giving free medical evaluations to the homeless in Balboa Park and other surrounding neighborhoods.

SAN DIEGO — Volunteers and healthcare professionals fanned out across Balboa Park on Saturday with a simple mission in mind: to help the homeless and to save lives.

The medical care professionals set out to do a unique form of medical care. They call it street medicine or as the event was named, House Calls for the Homeless.

Nearly 30 members from a medical ministry of First Presbyterian Church spent the afternoon giving free medical evaluations to the homeless in Balboa Park and other surrounding neighborhoods. The group included doctors and nurses along with street navigators. The group visited with dozens of people including Michael Hauck. Hauck told News 8 he has lived on the street for eight years and used to work construction, but his age is now holding him back.

The group also helped people with medications, ointments, and even got one woman to seek help for her heroin addiction.

The group says they want to do this event once a month, but if they get more volunteers they will aim to do it once every week.
