JULIAN, Calif. — A boil water notice was issued Saturday for the Butterfield Ranch mobile home and recreational vehicle community, county health officials said.
The water system, which tested positive for E. coli bacteria, supplies water to 313 service connections including 75 mobile home spaces, 233 RV spaces, an office with a store, a clubhouse and three swimming pools.
The community is located at 14925 Great Southern Overland in Julian.
The presence of E. coli bacteria indicates that water may be contaminated with human or animal waste, according to San Diego County spokeswoman Elaine Villena. Health effects can include diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other symptoms.
The bacteria may pose an increased health risk for infants, young children, some elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems.
The boil water order was issued by the county of San Diego's Department of Environmental Health and Quality to ensure that all water used is free from bacterial contamination and will remain in effect until laboratory results confirm the absence of bacteria in the water supply.
