Fall getaways and spooky travel escapes

Travel expert Angel Castellanos gives some spooky destinations as well as some that are off the beaten path.

SAN DIEGO — Angel Castellanos has been traveling for many years and recently traveled to his 85th country! He stopped by Morning Extra to give some great ideas on where you could go for a fall getaway.

Mendocino County, California: A hidden gem on the California Coast. There are lots of hidden coves and green landscapes that are reminiscent of Ireland or Scotland. The are is located just three hours from San Francisco or two hours from Sonoma County Airport. The area has everything you could imagine including: wine, historic train rides and beautiful inns. Visitors can expect zero crowds compared to Sonoma or Napa.

United Kingdom: The British Pound is at historic lows vs our very strong US dollar. Now is the time to go to the UK. Recently, Angel book two round trip flights to the UK for $514.83! Visitors can rent a car and head to Cotswolds or see historic country homes like Highclere Castle, the home of Downton Abbey. IF spooky spots are more your thing, you can go to the Tower of London or the London Dungeon.

Umbria, Italy: Fall in Italy means the wine harvest, festivals and truffle season. The big 3 of Venice, Florence and Rome are still crowded at this time of year. Angel suggests heading to Umbria because it’s everything Americans think of when they envision the Italian countryside: charming hill towns, vineyards and amazing food. Stay in a villa, agriturismo, or Albergo Difusso (a new innovative concept only found in Italy). The best part is there are relatively no crowds. Perugia has the biggest chocolate festival in Europe.

East Coast, United States: Salem Massachusetts- The spookiest town in America is most famous for the witch trails. Duchess County, New York is amazing with fall colors during this time of year. Fall colors are everywhere around small cute towns. Cemeteries on the East Coast have old headstones and even Revolutionary war veterans buried there. Super spooky! Stop in Portsmouth, New Hampshire for some amazing seafood and walk across to Maine for some good outlet shopping.

Secret Fall Getaway: Jordan - The weather is so nice in Jordan and it is safe. Many consider it to be the most peaceful place in the Middle East. Visitors can check out the historical Biblical sights, Roman ruins and of course the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is a well-known health & wellness getaway and you can live your best resort life. Don’t forget to float on the Dead Sea!
