CARLSBAD (CBS 8) - Nestled in the northeastern part of Carlsbad, lies a slice of historical wilderness - an ancient volcano and a dam dating back to the Second World War.
Lake Calavera Preserve is a hidden gem - one that attracts all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts.
Lake Calavera Preserve is also home to wildlife in the middle of the growing city of Carlsbad, which owns 262 acres of this land.
"It's a natural area that only supports plant and animal life found in Southern California," said Steve Jantz with the City of Carlsbad.
"Part of what's important about this is it connects the Buena Vista Park. So the interconnection of all these natural lands that makes it so important," added Diane Nygaard with Preserve Calavera.

Whether you're here to hike and bike or stopping by after work dressed in your office clothes, there's something here at Lake Calavera Preserve for everyone.
"It's an area for active uses, an area for habitat, area for history buffs, artists, bird watchers," Jantz noted.
Although this preserve is miles inland, what happens uphill affects life downhill.
"We all love our dogs and we want to take our dogs out, but dog poop is one of the worst pollutants in our local creeks," added Nygaard.
"Pretty much everything we do is with the dogs. I do get very upset when people don't pick up after their pets because that's why I think we get banned," said Eugenia Dopp.
