SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Researchers are shining a light on sharks that can glow in the dark, and they are using a special designed camera to capture the incredible images of the creatures that live right off the San Diego coast.

It is the first time scientists have been able to study the eyes and skin of catsharks and swellsharks in an effort to figure out how the animals see each other.

Researchers used the shark-eye camera, developed to mimic the vision of bio-fluorescent sharks, and dove into the deep waters of the Scripps Canyon.

"We analyzed the eyes and were specific to a color. We analyze spectrum of the skin they were matching and what we did was modify the lens of the camera to have a shark eye. With the shark eye you can start to see all those sharks dressing in green popping up everywhere," said Demitri Deheyn.

According to Dimitri Deheyn, a researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, the sharks communicate with each other through visual communication, which is critical to the underwater world.

The new discovery has left scientists excited to explore more,  but with more questions than answers at the moment.
