SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The USS Fort Worth is gearing up for her maiden deployment.

The crew of about 100 personnel will head to Southeast Asia on Monday to work with other navies and build relationships with allies.

The littoral combat ship is designed to go fast, and is a low cost option compared to the higher end ships in the Navy, but is more than capable to perform a variety of missions.

"We multi-mission platform, definitely we bring a lot to the table. Just having a ship in the vicinity to be able to respond to anything in the region, we can do that," Lt. Cmdr. Mark Haney said.

The USS Fort Worth will be deployed for 16 months, but the crews will rotate every four months.
