South Bay police chase ends in deadly crash

Officers said the driver was ejected from the vehicle and killed. Two other passengers were transported to an area hospital.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — A high-speed chase in the South Bay Wednesday night ended in a deadly crash, according to Chula Vista Police Department.

The chase started just before 8 p.m., when Chula Vista police tried to pull over a grey Mercedes with fake tags.

The driver took off, reaching speeds up to 70 miles-per-hour on surface streets before losing control and crashing into a retaining wall and telephone poll on Hilltop, near Castle Park Elementary.

Officers said the driver was ejected from the vehicle and killed. His name was withheld pending family notification. Two other passengers were transported to an area hospital and were treated for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Police said they believe all three have criminal ties.

A handgun and drugs were discovered from the car, according to police. Both passengers are expected to face charges.
