West Sacramento Police shoot, kill man after incident in Walmart parking lot

Streets in the area are expected to be closed for several hours because of the incident, police said.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man is dead after being shot by West Sacramento Police officers during an incident in the parking lot of a Walmart store, Thursday afternoon.

Officers were initially called out to the Walmart parking lot near Reed Avenue and Riverpoint Court around 3:45 p.m. A witness told 911 they saw the man stab himself in the neck with a knife. Officers responded and confronted the subject, so far only identified as a man in his 20s.

At some point during the confrontation at least one officer opened fire, striking and killing the subject. Details of what led up to the shooting have not yet been revealed. Police say the subject was armed at the time of the shooting.

“The guy came out and started going towards them with something on him and then they couldn’t stop him so they started shooting him,” a witness to the shooting told ABC10.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the altercation. Streets in the area are expected to be closed for several hours because of the incident, according to a post on the West Sacramento Police Department’s Twitter page.

“Use of deadly force is something that we take very seriously at the West Sacramento Police Department and it is a last resort when there are no other options available," said West Sacramento Police Sgt. Stefan Iwanicki.

The Yolo County Officer-Involved Shooting Fatal Incident Protocol will call for an independent investigation, conducted by Woodland Police and the Yolo County District Attorney's Office.
