SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 54-year-old man accused of breaking into a Hillcrest apartment and riding off in an elderly man's electric wheelchair pleaded not guilty Monday at the downtown courthouse.

Stanley McQuery confronted the 79-year-old resident of the apartment on Sixth Avenue near Evans Place shortly after 3:30 a.m. Thursday, pushed him out of his wheelchair and took his phone, according to San Diego police. The resident suffered minor injuries.

McQuery attempted to ride the electric wheelchair to freedom, but police officers caught up to him a couple blocks away, police said. He ditched the wheelchair and tried to run off but was bitten by a police dog and taken into custody.
