FALLBROOK (CNS) - A 54-year-old man was in custody Thursday for allegedly driving drunk and causing a collision in Fallbrook that sent a young man and his wife to the hospital with major injuries, authorities said.
Randall Lee Arnold was driving a 1997 Mazda B2300 pickup northbound on South Mission Road when he failed to yield the right-of-way while attempting to turn left onto westbound Almond Street around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, said California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Parent.
The pickup collided with a 2010 Kawasaki motorcycle traveling about 50 mph southbound on South Mission Road, Parent said. The motorcycle driver was identified as Stuart Lessig, 24.
Lessig's 24-year-old wife, Elizabeth, was a passenger on the motorcycle, according to Parent, who said both were thrown off the bike and taken by paramedics to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido with major injuries.
Arnold suffered minor injuries in the collision and was treated and released from the same hospital before being booked into the Vista jail on suspicion of drunken driving. Bail was set at $100,000.
Arnold could make his first court appearance as early as Friday afternoon, according to jail records.
