Man Pleads Not Guilty In Crash That Killed Woman On SR-67

A motorist accused of crossing into oncoming traffic on state Route 67 in Ramona and causing a crash that killed a 25-year-old woman pleaded not guilty today to vehicular manslaughter.

Melvin Pearles, 48, faces up to six years in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Martin Doyle.

El Cajon Judge Charles Ervin allowed Pearles to remain free on his own recognizance, but he had to give up his driver's license.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Pearles was driving a Jaguar south of Archie Moore Road at more than 80 mph on March 29 when the car sideswiped another vehicle and then slammed into a Volvo driven by Alexandria Drake, who was killed.
