VISTA (CNS) - A man who took part in the 2008 beating death of an intoxicated teenager on the Pala Indian Reservation was sentenced Thursday to 15 years to life in state prison.
John Edward Maxcy, 33, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of 18-year-old Devin Blackowl.
A co-defendant, Brent Lee Molina, pleaded guilty last August to voluntary manslaughter, mayhem, kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to 15 years behind bars.
The victim's body was discovered on July 24, 2008, in a dirt lot off Lilac Road, which was popular with off-road enthusiasts. A security surveillance camera caught the 90-second beating on tape.
Maxcy and Blackowl are believed to have known each other, but an exact motive wasn't known.
Deputy District Attorney Kate Flaherty said any motive the defendants might offer for the "terrible, senseless" crime wouldn't make any sense.
She said the defendants' extended prison sentences were well deserved.
