SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A man is hospitalized, after getting hit by a train downtown early Wednesday morning.

The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. on the tracks near Beech Street and Pacific Highway.

Police say two friends, both in their late 20's, were out walking after a night of heavy drinking.

"They'd been out drinking at multiple bars," said Brenda Wiebe Sheriff's Department. "His friend walked onto the railroad tracks. He followed him. He recalls hearing a train, seeing a train, next thing he knows is his friend is on the ground."

The man who was hit suffered severe leg trauma and could lose his leg. He is currently recovering at UCSD Medical Center.

Train traffic reopened around 4 a.m. Wednesday.
