SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8/CNS) - The motorcyclist killed Monday in a collision with a tanker truck near Naval Base San Diego in Barrio Logan was a 35-year-old father of six who worked in the area, according to a message on the crowd funding site GoFundMe
Omar "El Nene" Moreno worked at nearby National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, a division of General Dynamics, according to the post by friend and coworker Juan Osuna. A photo on the GoFundMe page showed Moreno posing for a photograph with five of his children, who range from teens to roughly kindergarten age.

His oldest child, 16-year-old Ashley Moreno says she has to be strong.

"[We] try our best to not cry," said Ashley. "But I don't know - it is difficult for us."
Moreno was a "son, brother and father of (six) beautiful kids," Osuna wrote on the page. "Nene you are going to be missed by all the NASSCO community, we are here to support your family in these hard times."

The family of six children and their mother Monica learned early Monday morning that that Moreno collided with a semi-truck while on his way to work.

San Diego police said Moreno was riding his motorcycle to the west near Naval Base San Diego shortly before 6 a.m. when the driver of a big rig made a left turn in his path in the 3500 block of Harbor Drive.

Moreno tried in vain to stop, then laid his two-wheeler onto the roadway and slid into the commercial vehicle, Officer Robert Heims said. No other injuries were reported.

Moreno died on scene just days before Thanksgiving.

"We were supposed to make plans yesterday," said Ashley. "We were going to buy everything: the turkey, the ham and then when my mom told me what happened... Actually, I didn't believe what was happening."

Wife Monica Moreno is still in shock saying her husband was amazing and unique.
As of Tuesday evening, a little more than half of the $20,000 goal on the GoFundMe page had been raised.

"I just want to thank all the people who have been helping us," said Ashley. "Maybe they don't know us, they don't know how he was, or anything about him, but he was a great person."

Moreno reportedly worked at the NASSCO shipbuilding yard headquartered near the crash site, south of the Coronado Bridge and north of Naval Base San Diego. A Facebook post by an alumni group said Moreno was a 2001 graduate of Montgomery High School in Otay Mesa.

General Dynamics NASSCO released the following statement on their employee's death:

All of us here at General Dynamics NASSCO are heartbroken about the loss.  A dedicated and hardworking employee since 2002.  He will be missed.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all those who loved him, including his fellow co-workers.
