SAN DIEGO — At Naval Base San Diego, the Navy took part in an active shooter drill on Tuesday. The video is pretty realistic, but again, it was just a drill and no one was actually hurt.
The scenario depicted an active shooter trying to board one of the ships at the pier. The mock shooter and Navy security personnel exchanged fire quickly using blank rounds.
They didn't stop until the threat was eliminated. Then they stopped, reset and started again. They tried to evaluate any weaknesses in their defenses on bases by evaluating the guards’ tactics and data they collected using the multiple integrated laser engagement system.
Tuesday's scenario is similar to what we saw happen during the Pearl Harbor shooting in 2019 and the Navy shipyard shooting in 2013. In both cases, the shooters had access to the installations via a pass or ID.
Many Navy bases across the country participated in Tuesday's drill. It’s done every year as they prepare against organized threats and attacks by lone wolves.
