SAN DIEGO (AP) - A Navy linguist discharged under the now-repealed military policy banning homosexuals from serving openly has been reinstated and he's heading for the Monterey Defense Language Institute.

The Los Angeles Times says 29-year-old Petty Officer 2nd Class Jase Daniels was sworn back into the Navy on Monday in San Diego.

Daniels was discharged in 2007 after he was featured in a Stars & Stripes newspaper article about gay military personnel.

Daniels, who served a year in Kuwait before his discharge, is a Hebrew linguist. He will study Farsi, which is spoken in Iran and Afghanistan.

Daniels was one of three plaintiffs in a 2010 case challenging the military "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Reinstatement bids by an Air Force major and an Air Force staff sergeant are pending.
