SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The CHP is doing whatever it can to keep young drivers safe. The inaugural installment of a new program called Steering Teens Straight was held Saturday.

These accidents that were acted out by local high school students and CHP officers were frightenly life-like. The point of this program is to offer teen drivers a realistic view of the consequences of drunk driving.

It is a heart stoppingly realistic scene of a possibly fatal car crash complete with a body, blood and raw emotion. Demonstrating the nightmare scenario in graphic detail, and also conveying the very real costs of driving while under the influence.

But this was no accident, as volunteers from the CHP and other law enforcement agencies teamed up with teens from several North County high schools.

Staging a shockingly authentic simulation of a drunk driving tragedy, these Carlsbad High juniors took part in Saturday's reenactment while other classmates captured the entire DUI drama on video.

The point of this new CHP program called Steering Kids Straight is to help young drivers make responsible choices before they get behind the wheel.

The experience made an impact that will stay with these high school students for years to come.

And this is not the end. In the months to come, students will continue to play out and videotape the fall out from this fictitious fatal accident.

All of the CHP, police and other public safety officials out there Saturday were volunteers donating their time and energy to a very worthwhile cause.
